Eunice Lulu Parsons Defies Convention Through Art

Eunice Lulu Parsons was a Portland-based artist who defied societal expectations by pursuing her passion for art despite being encouraged to prioritize marriage and family. She began taking classes at the Museum Art School (now Pacific Northwest College of Art) in 1950, but due to financial constraints, she only attended for one year. After her divorce, Parsons was hired as an instructor at the school, teaching for over 20 years. She later taught at other institutions including the Young Women's Christian Association and Portland State University. Parsons is best known for her collage work, which often incorporated found materials such as posters, magazine covers, and ticket stubs. Her art is held in the permanent collection of the Portland Museum of Art and can also be found at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, the Hallie Ford Museum of Art, and Portland Community College. Parsons' dedication to her craft influenced many artists who studied with her and befriended her during her lifetime.
